Crafting Your Personal Vows

Your wedding vows are arguably the most important promises you and your partner will ever make to each other.

Your personal vows can be traditional or voiced in a format that is all your own way including the option to include the legal vow at the start or end of your personal vows.

Remember to talk to each other about the length and style of your personal vows and if you would like to hear your partner’s personal vows for the first time, please email them to me separately.

Getting started:

  • Start with a statement about who this person is to you. Your best friend, your lover your partner in crime or your everything.

  • Continue by saying what it is you love about your partner.

  • Use a story to bring this love to life – tell a story or use an anecdote to bring your love to life.

  • Lay out exactly what it is you are promising. “I vow to always support you”, or “I promise to never steal the covers unless, you’re hogging them.”

  • Mention specific things the two of you will do together.

  • Don’t forget to add that you’ll be there even when times get rough.

  • Wrap up your vows with a look towards the future.

  • End your vows with one last promise, the promise of forever, for eternity and/or until death do us part.

Tips:

  • Use words such as ‘I promise’, ‘I vow’ or if you feel uncomfortable with the strength of these words, use ‘I will always try my best’…

  • Own up to your imperfections, saying things like, “I know I will drive you crazy”, or “I know that cooking is not my strong point”, shows resilience and the honesty is charming.

Example:

(Name),

You are the love of my life, my soul mate.

Who would have thought this day would come, it only took 11 years……5 months……and 4 days to get to where we are today, how time flies when you are having fun!

I promise to love you and support you through the good times and the not so good times.

I promise to laugh with you every day, and make you gin & tonics when life gives us lemons!

I am so proud of what you have achieved these past few years, and I am so excited for our next chapter together, you truly do complete me.

NOTE: The Legal Vow must be read to ensure your marriage is legal and can be included either before or after your personal vows.

Length…On average, vows are around 1 minute or 150 words.
